Newman is a unique prospect who is headed for bigger things at the collegiate level. She plays the game with energy, passion and enthusiasm that is rare to find at any level really. In addition to the heart that she plays with, her actual game play is unique as well. She has the size to play anywhere along the front line. She can defend post players with her size and strength. Yet she is mobile and nimble enough to lead the break in the open court. In an age that is becoming more “position-less”, Newman fits this descriptive all the way. Her defensive versatility is what could earn her major minutes as a freshman at Arizona State. She is a player that can trap high ball screens for quick point guards. Or she can switch on to slashing wings and should have the capacity to contain some of the best in the PAC-12. Newman’s biggest obstacle currently is herself. Not getting down on herself or holding herself to impossible expectations are common hurdles that driven young women (like herself) must overcome. When Newman does not live up to her own expectations, the frustration can become visible on her face. A highly perfectionist attitude is often what propels people to become successful. At the same time, if unchecked, it can become their greatest weakness as well. We expect Newman’s high character to carry her to new heights and figure it all out along the way. – Coach Hemi
From Brandon Clay's Spotlight Workout (6/20/2020)
Newman has the size and athleticism to be a major factor at the college level. She has improved her conditioning since our fall evaluation taking her game to new heights as a result. Newman has a chance to be one of the ten premier incoming freshman in the rising senior class this time next summer. As Newman continues to put in time on her craft shooting the basketball, expect the future Arizona State Sun Devil to see her production continue to increase.

Newman had a club game at 9:30 pm on Friday. She still made the trip in the opposite direction from the game venue to train with us before it started. The mechanics on her jump shot are vastly different now than they were the first time we trained last August. As a result, Newman is seeing results with her shooting efficiency. As that part of her game continues to improve, so will her overall skill set.

The growth in Newman’s game over the past 12 months was on full display here. She was able to battle some of the nation’s top frontcourt prospects on the interior than grab rebounds and take it coast to coast for the score. Newman has the size, ability and activity level to keep progressing like this again over the next year. She’s a player who is at her best when keeping the game simple, not living and dying with every mistake made but embracing the wins inside the process.

This showing did nothing but entrench her standing as an elite hybrid forward in the class. She has great length and size in the frontcourt.
