Barber delivered the type of performance we have come to expect from the high-energy floor general. She mastered the skill sessions with confidence while adding flair when appropriate. In game sessions, she was one of the most dominant play-makers in the camp. She makes plays with the dribble and does an effective job making the right read based up on what the help defense does. The strength of her game currently is using the ball screen to turn the corner and puncture the defense. What makes her driving ability so effective is her ability to change speeds and directions quickly. We have seen Barber shoot the ball very well in the past. However, during this weekend she was a little inconsistent with her jumper. Finding that consistency along with balance between shooting and driving will be important for Barber as she transitions to the college game.
Barber followed up an impressive March performance with an equally impactful camp in June. Her leadership skills and vocal presence were evident from the first skill station. When it came to game play Barber was able to force the issue with her effort and shot-making abilities. She hit shots off the dribble and was able to get into the lane by using the ball screen. What separates Barber as a play-maker is her IQ and ability to recognize how the defense is playing her. In one designed play, Barber was able to read the defense and make a fade cut when the defender anticipated the action. When it is all added up, Barber is a guard that make shots and impact the game with her play-making ability.
Barber made a terrific first impression at the CoachHemi.com Spring Showcase in March. From the outset, she set the tone for the camp with her energy and vocal leadership in camp drills. She went 100% and pushed herself and others to go harder and be better. In competition play, Barber raised eyebrows with her ability to create plays with the dribble. She has the utmost confidence in her ability to shoot and score. Although small, she does not let that be a hindrance to her game as she plays much bigger than her actual size. In that way, she reminds us of Darby Maggard (IN-15) who just finished a Freshman of the Year campaign in the OVC for Belmont. If there is something for Hannah to take away from this weekend, it would be the idea of learning how to balance looking for her shot and involving others. This is a concept that many young, talented point guards have to learn at some point. Understanding that she does not have to make THE play everytime down the court will help her efficiency and ultimately help her have a balanced floor game.
