A brief conversation with point guard Ashtyn Baker will reveal what is most important in her life. The Mississippi native explains that the mission field is where she wants to end up after college.
“I want to help others in the mission field after I graduate college,” Baker said. “Sharing the message of God to others is my ultimate goal in life.”
With that in context, her verbal commitment to Liberty University seems to be a natural fit. Liberty boasts of one of the largest mission programs in the United States. Baker gave her pledge to head coach Carey Green this May.
“I wanted to find a place that would grow me into a Godly young woman,” Baker said.
Baker also joins a program that has reached the NCAA Tournament 13 times in the past 17 seasons. This seems consistent with the winning reputation that Baker has gained as a prep prospect. She earned a starting point guard spot at Northpoint Christian School as an eighth grader. Heading into her senior season she has scored over 1,500 points, played in 132 consecutive games and sports a career record of 111-21 in those four seasons.
Last season she led her team to a TSSAA Division II-A State Championship and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Although she has a long list of individual accomplishments, her goals for next season seem consistent with her unselfish character.
“My goal for my senior season is to win a second straight state championship with my team,” Baker added.
Baker has earned praise from evaluators at the Elite Basketball Academy in the past year. Stephen Peck made this observation about Baker’s toughness at the EBA Super 64 Camp last June.
Early in a game on day one Baker got hit and had a bloody nose. By halftime she was right back in the game fearlessly attacking the lane as if nothing had happened.
Baker is quick to point out those people who have stood by her from the beginning.
“My high school coaches have encouraged me and pushed me every step of the way,” Baker said. “Barry and Lindy Gray and Ryan Richardson have helped tremendously in my development.”
