Lawson continues to prove she's a vocal leader. That consistency and the confidence she exudes clearly shows in her game's development as well. Lawson has the bounce and quickness we've seen the past two years but has added a subtle shift to her game that is evidence of real work invested her in handle. What we loved to see was an area for improvement a year ago, perimeter shooting, becoming a strength in this outing. She seemed to know where to be on the weak side to get open looks and she was knocking them down. She created havoc on defense as well.
Lawson is a freshman point guard that walks in the door with the things coaches often beg for from their leaders, passion and communication. She has been in the gym with us before so it was great to see her establish the standard at her basket automatically. She plays with an energy about her that infects her teammates. She elevates well which allowed her to finish against bigger defenders. Her jump shot is steadily improving and should continue to be the focus of her development during this opening salvo of high school basketball.
Lawson is a point guard with a mature skill set and a mature outlook on the game. She immediately caught our attention with her vocal leadership on the court and moreover it was the volume of vocalness that turned our head. It is not often to get that kind of leadership from a youth player, especially one that is still in middle school. On the skill side of Lawson’s game, she handles the ball well with either hand and shoots it with confidence. Defensively she anticipates and gets into the passing lanes to disrupt the opposition. If Lawson has a glaring weakness, it is her height, which unfortunately she cannot help. However, with time and physical maturation we believe that Lawson will be able to maximize her physical gifts. – Coach Hemi
