Aliyah Mazyck of Charlotte, N.C., chose to play for coach Cynthia Coopers Southern California program. Mazyck is the No. 55 ranked prospect overall nationally per ProspectsNation.com. More importantly, landing the 5-foot-9 guard gives Cooper her first incoming freshman who comes cross-country from the East Coast. In that regard, USC has re-established themselves as a program capable of recruiting the entire country.
A four-star prospect, Mazyck brings Cooper a dynamic option at the point guard position. Her compact build and aggressive style of play appear to fit right in with the way that the Women of Troy want to play. Following up on Coopers inaugural campaign that saw the team band together to win the PAC 12 Tournament, Mazyck is exactly the type of ELITE 100 ranked prospect that the program needs to maintain that sort of excellence.
The backcourt is in good hands with a combination of current freshman Chyanne Butler of Costa Mesa, Calif., and McKenzie Calvert of Schertz, Texas. Both were ELITE 100 ranked guards by ProspectsNation.com in the class of 2014. Former ELITE 100 prospects Brianna Barrett of Winnetka, Calif., and Jordan Adams of Irvine, Calif., will have at least one season on the roster. After redshirting her freshman season, Adams could potentially play for two alongside Butler.
Mazyck gives Southern California a nice start to following up a 2014 class that included four ELITE 150 caliber prospects. In addition to Mazyck, USC has a verbal from in-state three-star center Marguerite Effa of Los Angeles, Calif. Looking ahead, Cooper already has a pledge from class of 2017 prospect Ayanna Clark of Long Beach, Calif. Clark is currently the No. 2 rated player in the class nationally per ProspectsNation.com.
