Shaffer is a big force in the lane. She carves out space for herself to score on the offensive end and will rebound everything in her area on both ends. Normally for a player Shaffer's size, mobility is an issue. However, at the camp Emma showed that she can be effective not only running the court but also by moving from point A to B in the half court. Most notably was her high post drive from the elbow during 5/5 game play. The area where Shaffer will have to pay most attention to in upcoming months is perimeter defense. Teams will look to pull her out and put her into help situations in ball screens or guarding 'stretch 5 players' on the perimeter. She will need to improve her perimeter closeout footwork. Shaffer did not have the active feet needed to effectively defend these situations. This one technique improvement could improve her overall defense exponentially.
- - Mobility
Shaffer is a strong post who once again showed she can finish around the bucket consistently. Her hands are one of her best assets. She can catch a lot of passes that are entered into her area. She is strong physically and few people in this camp could move her off her spot, which makes her a terrific post up option. Yet she even showed a midrange jump shot, which gives her the versatility to score in a number of ways. Whether it is off the I-cut or in a pick and pop situation, Shaffer is a scoring threat. Her mobility and agility will be areas that she will need to improve in future years.
Shaffer is a post player who can anchor a team in the post. Her size to rebound and to be an offensive target can take pressure off of her teammates. Her footwork to create angles to score and to move to rebound makes her a legitimate threat in the post. She showed a nice sweeping jump hook at one point, which gives reason to believe that she can become a go-to scorer on the block. However, she will need to improve her ability to play through contact. Her finishing percentages seem to decrease as defenders played more physically.
