Bria McClure pulls up for a jumper at Check Me Out Texas.
While the senior class is wrapping up its early signing week, Texas Tech was working on signing classes of the future. Over the weekend head coach Candi Whitaker and the Lady Raiders tapped assistant coach Ray Caldwell’s San Antonio roots to land two underclass commitments.
Carleigh Wenzel, a 5-foot-7 guard from San Antonio, Texas, gave the Big 12 team her verbal commitment. Though not yet in high school, finishing up at Stevenson Middle School, Wenzel is one of the better young guards in the region and had a strong showing at the Check Me Out Showcase in San Antonio this spring.
While commitments this early are not the norm, they aren’t exactly unheard of either, especially if you’re from San Antonio. Deja Kelly, also of San Antonio, Texas, committed to the University of Texas during her seventh grade year.
Not long after Wenzel announced her commitment, the Lady Raiders got a commitment from dynamite 2021 point guard Bria McClure of San Antonio, Texas. McClure is diminutive in size but not in game. She has a moxy about her game and plays with a chip on her shoulder.
Current star guard Recee’ Caldwell will be succeeded by her sister, Desiree Caldwell, who is in the class of 2018. With McClure and Wenzel on board the pipeline of standout San Antonio guards heading to Lubbock will continue.
