Recruiting Rundown: April 18

Recruiting Rundown: April 18
Riley Donahue

Recruiting Rundown looks at some headlines from the across the country.  Commitments are pouring in at an increased rate. This last week was particularly busy.

Vanderbilt strikes again, this time, it’s class of 2021 guard Iyana Moore of Blackmon High School (Tenn.) anchoring down.  Moore caught my attention at the Nashville Training Academy co-hosted by Jonathan Hemingway. Moore has the skill and athleticism to play either position. I'm not sure that her skill set wouldn't be best suited as a primary scorer off of the ball long term. In that way, she has some Sydney Wallace (Georgia Tech grad) to her game. Moore made a nice right to left change of direction then took a 3 on the next trip. It didn't go down but the mechanics can be built upon.

Class of 2021 forward Brianna Turnage of Westlake High School (Atlanta, Georgia) committed to Virginia Tech.  Turnage is so smooth that her talent can be mistaken for indifference. That certainly was not the case here. She played big even working the low post to free throw line for FBC offensively. Turnage took an entry feed at 16 with a rip, face and knockdown jumper. She has all the tools to be a major player.

Class of 2020 guard Riley Donahue of Marist School (Atlanta, Georgia) chose Auburn. She’ll be a preferred walk on for the Tigers.  Donahue said no to multiple scholarship opportunities to chase her dream of competing for a spot on a Power 5 roster. She is a do-it-all guard who can succeed in a variety of settings. Donahue’s ability to shoot the ball was on display during this camp both in drill work and in game play. Her compact release allows her to get shots off with efficiency and accuracy.

Class of 2020 forward Mariyah Fletcher of Eagles Landing HS (McDonough, Georgia) chose Palm Beach Atlantic.  Fletcher’s recruitment caught fire during the months of March and April. She eventually decided to play alongside OMG-TGE club teammate, Chelsea Aalim. Fletcher is a mobile left-handed forward who provides versatility. Her athleticism allows her to be an impact defender and a rebounder on both ends of the court.

Class of 2021 point guard Paige Lyons of Wesleyan School (Norcross, Georgia) committed to East Carolina.  Lyons is strong yet compact guard capable of making a play especially in the open floor. Her end-to-end speed should allow her to be a high level defender on the ball for Kim McNeill’s group. In that way, that’s an elite skill that not many guards nationwide possess. If Lyons can become that in addition to a steady hand on the ball, the Pirates just upgraded in the backcourt.
