LAS VEGAS Sin City became Hoop City this week with teams from all across the country coming to try their luck on the recruiting circuit. The Elite 2013 Summer Showcase brought together a solid group of teams looking to impress college coaches with their play.
Andee Velasco (Yorba Linda, Calif.), OC Elite 2015
Velasco is no stranger to those on the circuit. Her play with Mater Dei High School (Santa Ana, Calif.) this past fall and winter has earned her plenty of notoriety, and deservedly so. This setting was different in that she didnt have Karlie and Katie Lou Samuelson at her disposal and she is called on to be a primary scorer for Matt Housers team.
While this outing may not have been the best games shes ever played, it was perhaps the clearest reason she is an ELITE 150 prospect in the rising junior class. Despite the need to score, she didnt lose any of the classic, throwback point guard play that has been her trademark. She is an expert at making her teammates look good by committing defenders on the drive and finding them in rhythm. Her size and ability to defend multiple perimeter spots is impressive as well. Once she finds consistency she could be one of the hotter names in recruiting out west.
AROUND THE RIM
♦ Nor Cal Elite wing-guard Elisabeth Alexander made one thing clear, she can flat out shoot the ball. The 5-foot-10 2015 prospect from Weston Ranch High School (Stockton, Calif.) reeled off three 3-pointers in a row in one stretch, proving that she is a real sharpshooter when the defense lets her get her feet set.
♦ Velascos sister, Bianca, is also coming into her own as a player. She brings good athleticism to the off guard position and can be disruptive on defense. She has a solid skill set on perimeter as well.
♦ Yasseme Yazzy Sadullah was clutch for Vegas Elite its comeback win over JBS Elite. The 5-7 guard from Quest Prep (Las Vegas, Nev.) showed a shiftiness and quickness with the ball which allowed her to create offense off the dribble and lead her team to a victory. The rising junior also showed range out to the 3-point line.
♦ Mandy Coleman and Josetta Fatuesi have been a big discussion point in recruiting circles, especially after strong showings at the Boro in the first half of July. Coleman showed here again that she brings dominant size to a potential lead guard position if she can get in elite shape. Fatuesi, on the other hand, is perhaps the most skilled big in the class out west and for the right system will be a major difference maker in college. Follow @ChrisHansenPSB
