Samantha Wanger, the No. 11 prospect in the ProspectsNation.com ELITE 150, has given her verbal commitment to the University of Texas.  The Irving, Texas, native, chose the Longhorns after originally committing to Baylor in 2019.  The 6-foot-1 swing player re-opened her recruitment after Bears head coach Kim Mulkey left to take over at LSU.

Wagner chose the Longhorns after narrowing down her second recruitment to Arizona, Baylor, LSU, Texas and USC.  She is the second Texas commitment in 2023, joining Abbie Boutilier, a 6-9 post from Flower Mound, Texas.

CLAY’S TAKE

In Wagner, Schaefer’s Texas program adds a versatile option who can play the new age point forward spot. Wagner has the length and size that allows her to switch multiple positions defensively. On the other end of the hardwood, the ELITE 25 prospect has shown major growth with the range on her outside 3-point shooting. If Wagner can consistently keep the floor spaced and her defender honest as a result, she’ll be even harder for opposing coaches to game plan for. A lot of Wagner’s next level production will hinge on her ability to quarterback the unit on the floor vocally. She has all of the physical tools to be impactful.

The Longhorns have eight players on the current roster that are either freshmen or sophomores and three 2022 signees, giving a real sense of what the roster will look when Wagner arrives.

In the transfer portal era it’s not as easy to predict if Texas will add to the 2023 class or save roster space.  Even without another 2023 addition or transfer in, the Longhorns have some ammunition for its move to the SEC in 2025.
