Just a week after wrapping up their 2018 class with one of the elite post players in the country, Olivia Owens. Brenda Frese and her staff are at it again, this time scoring a commitment from 2019 guard Ashley Owusu, the No. 10 ranked player in the ELITE 100. Owusu picked the Big Ten program over suitors from around the country including Notre Dame, Penn State, and others.
When Owusu steps on campus, she will give Maryland an offensive minded guard with the ability to make an immediate impact as a freshman. At 5-foot-9, Owusu has the size to play on or off the ball and can be used in a variety of ways depending on personnel or desired style of play.
Landing one of the top players in the country is always a big deal, but for Maryland score early in the 2019 recruiting process allows for Owusu’s commitment to act as a potential catalyst for a top national recruiting class. Maryland has always had success recruiting in targeted spots nationally, but much of the success and Freese and her program has been mining the elite prospects in her backyard, 2019 is a great opportunity for her to mine away. The famed DMV region, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, is always ripe with talent, but the 2019 class could be considered unusually strong, especially if you drive 90 minutes north or 90 minutes south of Maryland’s campus to hit states such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and southern Virginia. One potential Maryland target that stands out is 2019 forward Samantha Brunelle who lives in Virginia, another player Freese and her staff have been linked with is 2019 post Malu Tshitenge of Washington D.C., who is an elite shot blocker and rebounder while 2019 post Akunna Konkwo who attends high school in Virginia, could be another option the Terps choose to pursue.
