Welsh is a player that we have become very familiar with over the last year and she has continued her process of growing her basketball perspective and gaining confidence in her approach. This weekend in particular, she looks more involved on defense and is starting to play more aggressive getting to loose balls, and even getting after plays that aren’t as obvious to a passive defender. Seeing that aggressiveness and also a little more assertiveness on the offensive end is starting to come to the forefront for her. She had some high IQ plays in transition where she got the ball up the court and put herself and her teammate in a good opportunity to score, which is just high quality basketball. Continuing her development in ball-handling, creating space to release pressure from physical defenders, and getting her 1-2 step 3-pointer dialed in are all areas to continue to build on and excel at. Welsh is only in the 2021 class and has the time and upside to take her game to whatever level she is willing to get to.
Welsh is a class of 2021 guard with a strong desire to continue to develop her game. Since the last time we saw her, her ball handling and basketball IQ has improved and she is starting to take more initiative on the offensive end. She's proved to be a team player and at times may pass up some opportunities where she should take the shot, but its great watching her play within the team and look to distribute the ball. Developing her 1-2 step 3-ball and being able to release pressure will be areas of improvement for her going forward. Overall, Welsh is a hard worker and after watching her compete over this last weekend, her approach is to continue to put the work in and improve everyday.
Welsh is a 5-foot-6 guard with strong court awareness and showed good vocal court leadership defensively. Right now, she looks to pass first offensively, but plays very solid and doesn't turn the ball over. As she gains more confidence off the dribble, finding more ways to get her teammates involved off the bounce will be great for her game, because she has good guard size and strength. Going forward, Welsh needs to further inject herself into the pace of the game. She runs the floor well along the sidelines and does a good job of matching up defensively, but becoming more active on the interior, whether its pursuing defensive rebounds or penetrating at the rim, will be key for her development in the future. Overall, she has a lot of upside and as she becomes more assertive, her game will start to take shape as she enters into her high school career in the next year of two, truly developing her identity.
