This latest Featured Player Evaluation focuses on Mckinzee Barker who projects as a combo guard at the college level.

Mckinzee Barker of Bomont, W.Va., proved at the Elite Basketball Academy Super 64 Camp in June that she is one of the Mountain State’s top prospects in the class of 2015.

Vitals

Name: Mckinzee Barker – Grad Year: 2015 Location: Clay, W.Va. – School: Clay County HS Current Position: PG – Projected Position: PG/SG

Strengths

Standing 5 feet 10 inches, Barker has above average size at the point guard position. Off the bounce, Barker loves to attack the lane to facilitate or finish around the rim, averaging right at 13 points a game to go with seven assists per as a sophomore. She does a good job of making plays in traffic using her frame to take contact and still finish the play with a bump. Her aggressiveness extends to the defensive end of the floor as well. The three-star prospect does a good job of reading the passer’s eyes to then make a break on the basketball.

Area To Improve

Going forward, Barker will be able to continue to extend her range and shooting consistency. Knocking down the open ball reversal 3-pointer at the next level will only aid the two-time All State selection as she works her way into a college rotation early in her career. A right-handed shooter, Barker keeps the ball high in her shooting pocket and should be a high percentage jump shooter with her feet set or off of the one dribble pull-up jump shot.

The Bottom Line

With her size and skill set, Barker is definitely a scholarship caliber prospect at the point guard position. That said her versatility should allow a college coach to get her minutes at the off guard spot as well if need be. We expect her recruitment to continue to take shape over the course of the next six-to-eight months during the high school season.
