Oregon coach Kelly Graves and his staff picked up one of the tallest prospects in the 2016 class Wednesday when they added four-star post, Lydia Giomi of Seattle, Wash., to the Ducks’ five-player 2016 class. Giomi picked the PAC-12 school over a number of other PAC-12 programs that had offered the 6-foot-6 post, including Colorado, Oregon State, Washington, and Washington State.
For Oregon, the addition of Giomi gives them a true center to develop and coach in hopes of turning her into a high level shot changer and potentially a back to the basket scoring threat. At this point in Giomi’s development, she is still learning the game and has been a bit inconsistent with her level of production. While her collegiate potential is certainly worthy of serious interest, Giomi will take some time to produce and develop at the college level.
Giomi has upside and the Oregon class of five will provide Graves and his staff with enough depth to allow her to grow and develop. Oregon’s 2016 class now has positional balance and talent all around.
At the point guard Oregon went to Down Under to add International ELITE Watch List prospect Morgan Yaeger of Forestville, Australia. On the wing Jayde Woods of Yorba Linda, Calif., is a four-star wing, and in the frontcourt Sierra Campisano of San Diego, Calif., and Mallory McGuire of Reno, Nev., are both four-star prospects. The addition of Giomi to this group will give Oregon a potential top 10 caliber recruiting class and ample length all over the court.
Add 2015 signee Lauren Yearwood of Victoria, B.C., to McGwire and Giomi and the Oregon front court will be young, long and deep in the post-Jillian Alleyne era.
If Oregon is able to pull off one of their final targets, Sabrina Ionescu of Walnut Creek, Calif., or Dijonai Carrington of San Diego, Calif., look for the class to compete for one of the top five spots nationally.
