After an unofficial visit to the University of Miami, class of 2017 guard Taylor Mason of Decatur, Ga., has made a verbal pledge to the ACC school. Mason, a 5-foot-9 guard, picked Miami over a range of programs including, Arizona, Auburn, Georgia, Syracuse, Virginia and West Virginia.
At this point in Mason’s development, she is best described as a power guard. Defensively, Mason is a pest with the ability to give up height in a match-up because of her strength and her consistently high level of focus on that side of the ball. Offensively, Mason is at her best when she can play around the rim, whether that is using the drive or a quick post touch, Mason is physical enough to finish through contact. As she makes the move from the prep ranks to the ACC, Mason is going to need to continue to expand her guard skills, refining her perimeter jumper and becoming more of a playmaker with the ball in her hands are two areas that Mason will need to develop.
For coach Katie Meier and her staff, Mason represents their second verbal commitment in the 2017 class as they already have a Georgia prep prospect commitment from Endia Banks of Duluth, Ga. The combo of Mason and Banks gives Miami two ELITE 100 guards to build their 2017 class around. Look for the Hurricane’s to look to score a post player next with players such as Raven Farley of Elizabeth, N.J., and Grace Marko of Boca Raton, Fla., on their radar.
