Khayla Pointer, the No. 14 ranked player in the class of 2017, has ended her recruitment and made a verbal pledge to LSU. Pointer, who is the niece of LSU coach Nikki Fargas, gives the SEC school their first verbal commitment in the 2017 class and their highest commitment since Raigyne Moncrief in the 2013 class.
For LSU, the addition of Pointer will give the progam a likely four-year starter at the point guard position as her ability to make plays as a passer and attack the paint off the bounce will be a needed addition to the LSU backcourt. Throughout her prep career, Pointer has worked to improve her perimeter shooting ability. From her freshman year to now there have certainly been strides in this area as she has grown into a player who can make shots with her feet set. As she makes the jump from the prep ranks to the SEC, this will continue to be a key are of development for Pointer.
With a verbal pledge from one of the top point guards in the class, LSU coach Nikki Caldwell and her staff need to use this momentum and build a solid recruiting class around the dynamic point guard they just landed. As we go into the second part of July and then approach the early signing period, look for LSU to be in the mix for at least a 2017 post and a 2017 wing.
