Class of 2017 wing Mikayla Coombs of Buford, Ga., has committed to Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma and his staff.  Coombs, a four-star prospect, is the No. 22 ranked player in the ELITE 100 for the class of 2017.

In addition to Connecticut, Coombs considered a number of programs including Georgia, Georgia Tech and Virginia.  Her decision to pick the reigning national champions gives UConn its third ELITE 100 wing in the 2017 class.  This high school season the 5-foot-10 wing worked her way back from a knee injury and re-establish herself among the top wing prospects in the 2017 class.  For Connecticut, Coombs has the potential to be a slashing wing and use her advanced mid-range game to keep defenders off-balance.

The addition of Coombs to Connecticut’s 2017 class leads one to believe that the staff is seriously looking to stockpile wings this year.  They have already secured verbal commitments from Andra Espinoza-Hunter of Blairstown, N.J., and Lexi Gordon of Ft. Worth, Texas. In addition to Espinoza-Hunter and Gordon, Connecticut is in pursuit of No. 1 overall Megan Walker of Richmond, Va., and one of the top International wings in Chantel Horvat of Melbourne, Australia. As you look at Connecticut’s wing crop, the potential addition of either Walker or Horvat would give the Huskies their fourth wing prospect for the 2017 class.
